Skip the marketing. These four points decide whether a VPN is worth your money.
1. A verified no-logs policy
“No logs” means nothing without an audit. Look for a recent independent report from Cure53, Deloitte, or PwC. Providers that refuse to publish one are hiding something.
2. A kill-switch that actually kills traffic
Test it yourself: start a download, then disable Wi-Fi. If the download resumes for even one second before reconnecting through the VPN, the kill-switch is broken.
3. Real speed, not “up to” speed
Any VPN can advertise 10 Gbps. What matters is throughput on a server 1,000 km away during peak hours. All three picks above stayed above 450 Mbps in our tests.
4. Jurisdiction and ownership
Five Eyes, Nine Eyes and Fourteen Eyes alliances can compel data disclosure. Providers based in Panama, Switzerland or the British Virgin Islands have stronger legal shields.
